Carriçal
São Nicolau Island
Carriçal, situated in the south-east of the island of São Nicolau, is one of the most original fishing villages in Cape Verde.
In this unspoilt place, one feels as though time stood still a long time ago.
The small village, with just under 200 inhabitants, is powered by solar energy; there are a few small shops, bars and a school, as well as an abandoned tuna factory.
Most of the inhabitants make their living from fishing, whilst a few also rely on agriculture.
At the end of the world, but accessible
Carriçal can be reached via a bumpy dirt track – about an hour’s drive from Juncalinho. This road is currently being resurfaced and is due to be an asphalt road by the end of 2027.
Carriçal was marked on the maps of Portuguese seafarers as a watering hole. The spring still flows today, supplying the agricultural valley and the village.
The warm, temperate summer climate makes it ideal for swimming all year round.
