A LADDER INTO THE SEA

Swimming & Snorkelling

Swimming in Carriçal Bay, where the water temperature ranges between 24 and 27 degrees, is lovely and completely safe, as long as you don’t swim out into the open sea (where there are currents). Our steel ladder provides a safe and convenient way to get in and out of the water all year round.

Snorkelling is available all year round. Please bring your own snorkelling gear. Several turtles live in the bay, and you’ll often spot them whilst snorkelling.

BOAT TRIP

Angling, fishing,
boat trips

Angling/fishing – The shore is a great spot for fishing. Sea angling, bottom fishing or trolling from a hired boat with Cabeça, our experienced fisherman.

Boat trips – Hire a boat with Cabeça, e.g. heading west to Preguiça or to Porto Lapa, Cape Verde’s first port. You’ll see flying fish and, with a bit of luck, dolphins, turtles, a whale or a shark.

VIEW FROM THE VOLCANO

Hiking

Day hikes – along the coast heading west or east, up the nearby volcanoes, to the Carriçal spring, to the ‘Ponta do Agua’ cave, where fresh water flows into the sea all year round, to ‘Praia Azul’, which looks just like the Caribbean, or to Juncalinho.

If you don’t want to set off on your own, you can hire one of the guides in Carriçal.

TRIP TO JUNCALINHO

Country excursions

Country excursions with Dodje, our reliable and calm driver, in his pick-up. For example, Castelhão, an oasis on the north coast.

The seawater pools at Lagoa in the village of Juncalinho are definitely worth a visit. The Monto Gordo Forest, a nature reserve, is well worth a walk.

For walks, you can arrange to be dropped off at a location and then walk back, or walk there and be picked up from there.

BABY TURTLES AT PONTA CALMA

Observing nature

Nature-watching from the terraces of the houses:
Turtles (some live in the bay). Dolphins (all year round), whales (June to August), whale sharks, manta rays, stargazing.

On the beach: turtles laying eggs (June to August), hatching (September to November) with Sidney, the turtle ambassador, who’ll be happy to show you the turtles.

Thanks to its superb location offering plenty of privacy, the Ponta Calma peninsula is also ideal for sunbathing, reading, writing, painting, meditating, relaxing…
